Falkland Bothy Ballad competition 2019 – at Stonehaven!

The temporary move of the 2019 Falkland Festival Bothy Ballad Competition to Stonehaven worked out extremely well. By running the event as part of the Stonehaven Festival during Falkland’s year out, the continuity of the competition was maintained, competitors did not lose the opportunity to take part, and there would still be a winner who would qualify for the Champion of Champions event in Elgin in February2020.

There were 13 entrants for the competition, with almost as many ladies as men taking part. The youngest competitor was only 17 years old. The competition attracted a large audience of over 50 to the British Legion in Stonehaven with those in attendance being well entertained by the high standard of Bothy Ballad singing from all the entrants.

Judging was carried out by Jimmy Hutchison, one of the organisers of Falkland Festival and a well-known, experienced singer and performer in his own right. Jimmy was assisted by another established singer, Allan Taylor, who has already qualified for next years Champions of Champions.

After more than an hour of great entertainment the winners were announced:

First place Geordie Murison

Second equal Shona Donaldson and Hector Riddell

Third place Ellie Beaton

Geordie will therefore qualify for Elgin as well as holding the Falkland trophy for a year. Geordie, Shona and Hector are all past holders of the Champion of Champions crown; and Ellie is surely a strong contender for similar success in the future.

The Falkland Festival organisers wish to express their warmest thanks to Stonehaven Festival for their assistance in accommodating the Falkland Bothy Ballad competition as part of their own very successful festival in 2019. It is hoped that the Falkland Festival – along with its Bothy Ballad competition – will return to its home in Falkland in 2020.

These are for Men’s and Women’s Traditional Singing, Bothy Ballad and Ceilidh Band (Under 16 category) and have very kindly been donated by supporters of the festival : Jimmy Hutchison, Doris Rougvie, Graham Livingstone and Gordon Shand respectively. A huge thank you to you all.

Venue change and improved access (May 2016)

We are delighted to announce a slight venue alteration in as much as we are now using the downstairs room of the Old Town Hall rather than the upstairs one. This means that our singing competitions, talk and fiddle workshop will all be downstairs, wheelchair accessible if required! No more flights of narrow stairs to contend with. We are hoping that this will provide greater accessibility for our festival attendees.

Fundraiser: Fiddle Workshop with Paul Anderson

We’ve been busy organising a fiddle workshop on Sunday 8th November 2015  with Paul Anderson booked and raring to go! We will be in the upstairs room of the Old Town Hall for the workshop. We look forward to seeing you all again in Falkland for a great day of music.

Festival addition (17/6/2015)

News just in: Allan Henderson will be joining Fergie MacDonald and his Ceilidh Band on Friday night in the Village Hall; some great music to dance to and listen to as well! Allan will also join Fergie at the button key accordion workshop on Saturday morning, it’s going to be great fun!

Change to camping arrangements (16/6/2015)

Due to groundworks being carried out on the original campsite on Falkland Estate, we now have camping in the field opposite The Stables. This is for tents only and cars must be parked in the car park opposite. An area at the top of the car park will be set aside for campervans. Toilet facilities will still be provided. A stand pipe may be in place by the end of next week but if not, there is access to fresh water from an outside tap at The Stables. Please contact us for more details or to book your pitch.
